I don't mind writing articles on numerous topics. But will linking an article on food and drink - to a business website - harm the rating/relevance of that site - or is it just the links keywords that count?

Yes and No.
First I don't know are they (article directories) gonna approve it if the topic not matches the links in it. It is not related link form such a content, but is a link - and as we all know every link is a bonus, having in mind that most of us searching for link everywhere.

The best combinations is: Related content and a link from it. This is much better. Yahoo counts related link, Google and MSN count every single link as a beneficial. Have a great day and good luck.

Well an unrelated article is fairly useless to someone not at all interested in such a thing. You might gain a link, but won't get many quality visitors - as soon as they get to your site (assuming they decide to visit a site that is not related to their interests), they'll go back to the original site without surfing or clicking on ads.
