I'm building a new website for a business idea which should appeal to the general public. I feel advertising in the National newspapers should drive traffic to the site. Any ideas anyone??

Well, you could call up the newspaper and buy and add. The only problem, in my opinion, is that there's no way for you to know if they came from the newspaper or elsewhere (unless you ask them).

I've had success when my site was featured in magazines. I'd imagine if it appealed to the general public with enough interest they'd check it out.

But how do you know the success was a result of the magazine promo and not something else?

Or you could create a redirect link for tracking.
For example,
http://mysite.com/nytimes
http://mysite.com/boshearald
have all of those 301 to http://mysite.com
Your logs will show the original request

Thanks for you input guys - I'm a lazy sod so putting up signs at street corners doesn't appeal to me. I'll just try the ads in the papers and I'll let you know how I progress - the site should be ready in about a week and then I'll go with the ads. In my case I'll know that all the replies (if any) came from my ads because I'm not promoting it any other way just now.

Yeah, I was half tempted to do a 'flyer' drop of sorts...but what does that say about your business..specially if you are advertising customers and traffic..then why are you plastering wal*doom parking lots with your ads? =p

I even tried to rationalize that idea..by using a fake referal id...but still no. I dont think I could bring myself to do that.

If you do something like this, make sure you use a unique URL for tracking purposes so that you can tell where your traffic came from.

Thanks guys. The only way to find out is to put my foot in the water. My ad will only be a two liner in the personal columns and wont break the bank. If it works it works and if it doesn't I wont cry. I have a few more irons in the fire so I'm feeling confident enough to take a gamble.

I've just fast tracked the project and my first (and maybe my last) ad will appear in the Irish Times personal columns on Sat 19th. The site is complete for now. The ad a two liner ad and it cost me the bones of €100. You guys might be able to try something similar in your neck of the woods but I think this is just an Irish thing. good and bad news guys - my site looks good and is all I could expect from my first. The ad looked good in the paper. Only two people viewed the site as a result - so far. I know its very niche and wont appeal to many but in Ireland you never know until you try. you can see my site irishobituaries.org and let me know what you think.

I built a reasonable site. you can see it at irishobituaries.org. I put a two line ad in the Irish Times yesterday. good and bad news guys - The ad looked good in the paper. Only two people viewed the site as a result - so far.

It's also a good source of traffic but it defends on your business.

Keeping with the paper a bit longer.
I think it may grow on the public.
