You really should be using forums for conversation and contributing to the community.. Not spamming for links..

The value in forum links comes from participating in the forum. As a backlink sigs are pretty low in quality. If you contribute to the forum and add something to the discussion you'll get direct traffic through them and probably find yourself with a few new friends who will help you promote your site.

Joining a forum just to get backlinks is rather useless. Chances are your posts will end up being deleted and even if they're not the value in the links isn't much.

It's why we have a 50 post minimum for active links of any kind, sig or in post.. Saves the hassle of deleting and banning people

I know that my sig link has lead directly to sale at our jewelry store.. For that reason alone I tend to have some form of jewelry link most places I participate at..

Choose some forum that you can contribute consistently and you will found it help on backlink as long as you contribute something there.

that's a good attitude. forum posting is a 2-way arrangement. members give time and share helpful knowledge and fun...etc and they can be rewarded with sig links which are very useful for yahoo seo, and quite useful in optimising for other engines; speaking from experience.

most forums have "no follow" tag. so joining for the benefit of the sigs is useless.

That's a useful list. But I would like to also see a list showing the forums / blogs without no follow tags in place. They do exist, but looking at source code before posting can get time consuming.
