Please forgive me if this isn't the most appropriate place to post this, If it should be somewhere else, please let me know where...
I’ve been lurking on this board for awhile now. I was even encouraged to start my own home based internet business as some of you have. My goal like so many others is to make this my fulltime job and provide a reasonable income from it. I read through a topic on here about “Does anyone make a living on here?” There were lots of helpful people so I thought I would give this a shot.
I began researching about doing this as my job about 6 months ago, since then I have learned a great deal. Since I have a computer/networking background for my professional career, making the switch to an internet career was much easier. I know what goes on behind the scenes and how it all works.
I’ve read many PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) books over the years and one thing I have learned from them is we never have all the answers AND to seek people out who have actually done what you wish to accomplish. If I want to learn to ski, I better learn from someone that actually KNOWS how to ski than someone who thinks they know how to do it. This is the reason for my post.
I am looking for someone who has a successful internet business that actually does it full time, and makes a decent living from it, to be my mentor. Someone I can meet with one on one each week either on chat or phone. Someone I can ask questions about ideas, concepts, and strategies. Someone that will be honest with me and not try and sell me some program or eBook to get my answer J Someone to take me under their wing and help me out basically. You must be willing to talk on the phone with me, as sometimes it’s easier to convey ideas and ask questions. I don’t mind emails and chatting on the computer, I just want this to be personal to both of us. You don’t need to live near me for this to work.
I am upfront and honest and believe in treating people the way I want to be treated. I give my trust until it’s violated. The main reason I am doing this work from home business is so I can stay home with my 3 month old daughter until I can make enough for my wife to stay home with her too. I’m 37 years old and live in Portland Oregon. I am real and hope that you will be too.
If this is something that interests you, please contact me at lordwill@yahoo.com or William@homebizstrategy.net
Look forward to hearing from you!
William
I am VERY serious about this.

Is there anything I can add to sweeten up this deal? Money? Computer help? I really would like to find someone to talk to about all of this. I am totally for real and am willing to do whatever it takes to make it and be successful. Just give me a chance please!!

William I don't think people need to have the deal sweetened. I think having a mentor is a great thing, but from the perspective the mentor it takes time and work. Most people won't just mentor anyone. They'll probably want to know you first outside of the mentor/mentee relationship. They'll probably want to see something in you that makes them want to help, maybe they see something in you that lets them know you'll be a success with a little bit of direction.
The best things you can do are to learn what you can on your own. It sounds like you're already doing that, but keep at it. Next start to get to know people. You have 10 posts here as I write this. None of us know you well enough to know if we'd want to take on the time and work mentoring you. Post more and get to know the people here.
A lot of people blog and you can learn a lot from them by reading their blog. It's not quite a mentorship, but it's not that far off in many respects. Read some blogs and start commenting. Get to know the bloggers. Don't necessarily ask them to be a mentor. Just see if you can get to know them by interacting with them.

Its true... Yes, you can get idea from other (like this!), but learning on your own is the best way to gain knowledge. Dont be afraid to try and fail. Failure is just a part of learning. Learn from your mistakes. Sure, you'll be successful, too. Dont stop on studying. Keep on learning NEW things. Share your knowledge, and accept criticisms.

You may also want to tell us what kind of home-based internet business you want to get into as it actually covers a lot of different areas.

Virtuosi Media had a really good point.
If you are trying to start an SEO home based company, you will find plenty of useful information on this forum. If you are looking for something specific, either start a thread or ask a moderator to redirect you to an already existing thread.
I suggest you to read a lot of blogs and articles:
Don't hesitate to ask question on this forum. There are a lot of very competent people ready to answer you kindly.
If you are trying to start another kind of home-based company, let us know what it is and maybe we can all help you. Being a mentor takes a lot of time. But why would you stick to one mentor when you can have 100? Ask questions here, and the most competent person will answer you.

That's not very nice to the other 53 users that wanted to post the same excellent advice.
Good thing that they will still post it, even though 13 other OP already said that in the same thread. It's safer, just because we could miss it 13 times...
How would we "optimize" a website without building 100000 links????

Mentors are great, look at all the jobs in the world that require you go through an apprenticeship program. Let's start with doctors. Seven years of school or more and then they become residents and start their real training. Plumbers, electricians, financial advisors (at most companies). Hell even Tiger Woods has a swing coach STILL.
You're on the right track in seeking one, the problems with finding one are already listed in this thread.

William just a thought, but is it possible you could find someone in your area that has a similar business to the kind you're thinking of starting.
Maybe search for internet businesses you'd like to learn and make sure to add your location in the search. Spend a little time on the results and find say a half dozen sites you really like.
Then get in touch with the owners of those sites. Introduce yourself, tell them why you like their sites, and simply volunteer to help. Be honest and let the person know you're hoping to learn and would be happy to volunteer your time for a chance to get some of that learning.
I think people will be more open to the idea of you volunteering to help them than they will to you asking them to help you. In the end it amounts to the same thing, but it's presented differently.
Assuming you're happy where you're volunteering I would be in time a mentor relationship would develop.

I have just started promoting that I am looking for interns for my SEO business here in Tucson. The University here has a large MIS department. We are offering training without pay but the only ones interested are from India. Americans want to be paid to learn. I find this very interesting.

I help out local internships at the college concerning drafting and design, so I'd be glad to retrofit an internship for that into internet marketing. PM me if you want, I'll do it for free. Web based, email, telephone, all fine.

Sorry for not responding sooner, all very good suggestions and its given me a few things to think about. I agree Vangogh that I shouldnt limit myself to just one person, the more the merrier. On the flip side of that, having one main source that you can trust to steer you the right way is very helpful as well.
Part of my problem is I have too many ideas. Selling Ebooks, Flipping Sites, Membership sites, Software as a Service (SAS) for certain industries, affiliate marketing, and the list goes on and on.... So finding someone who has been successful at even one of these and willing to share the info would help me figure out what I should even start with. I have a site up now but its certainly not the end all be all site.
I am seriously considering getting into the Web Development side of the biz so that I can actually build the sites myself instead of relying on others.

Also just wanted to say thank you to all the people that supported me finding a Mentor. I've read lots of Positive Mental Attitude and I remember reading that if you want to be the best, train under someone who has done what you are looking to do. Copy them and be successful. So I thought I would apply it to this. Why reinvent the wheel so to speak. I didn't mean for it to sound just a one way street either. I think I have a thing or two to offer as well.

Glad we could help William. I can understand what you're doing. I've been looking to do many of the same things. One thing I would suggest from experience is not to try to get them all done at once. Pick one and work at it till you reach a point where you're ready for the next.
Affiliate marketing might be a good way to start since you won't have to develop a product and you can still have a passive income coming in to help finance the other ideas. So learn everything you can about affiliate marketing and work that idea. A lot of what you'll learn will apply to your other ideas anyway.
As you're working on it think of ideas for ebooks and at some point start writing one. Next you can turn your ebook or some other idea into a membership site if you want.
Obviously you don't have to go with that same order, but pick one and learn how to do that. Then start learning more about the next idea, etc.
