Hi guys,

I am very new to alot of these concepts as far as running ones own website. My questions pertains to all the ads and banners and such you see on many websites, this one included.

Where do they come from? how can you find the right ads for your site, that are related but not competing? do graphical ads seem to be more effective then text based ones?

Are there any ad tabus like say having an ad on a sales page or having completely unrelated ads?

Last but not least, assuming you have traffic to your site, can you actually make a decent income from the ads themselves or is it just a good way to counter act your costs?

Ads come from major affiliate suppliers, such as yahoo, google, adbrite, clicksense, etc...

They get the ads from people like you and me who want to promote their website.

Yes you can make money, and there is two ways to do it..

If you have little or no traffic, you want your ads to be CPC (cost per click) and targeted to what your viewers are looking for.. (Gun site, gun ads.. Farm site, farm ads, etc)

If you have tons of traffic, you want to go CPM(Cost per 1000 views). Then everytime you display that banner or ad 1000 times, you will earn the CPM value...

Either way is fine, the whole point is driving traffic to your site. The best way to do that is to start free, and then go to paid advertising once your free advert efforts are generating income.

good luck!

Thanks that was very helpful. i guess what i need to do now is find sources for the ad's, i already have an adsense account. I think id be more intrested in ads like this forum has, banner type ads either animated or static. To me they just seem to fit in better and be eye catching without being annoying.
