how to promote new social networking site?

I've just launched new website and wonder how to promote it. It's not completely ready yet and I am adding more features but the idea is webmasters and affiliates to freely promote their products and do some networking.
How do I go on promoting. I already offered free membership to one of my other sites if users sign up for the social site, but its not enough I think
Any suggestions?
Thanx

Well, since it's a social networking site, try using your social network....
try to get your friends on, and get them to get their friends, and so on.... that's how social networks work.

The best way to promote it is but promoting it thru social networking site! Sure, there will be numbers of other social network participants who will try your site! Make sure you'll offer something unique on your site!

Yeah okay I'm having the same issue. willcode4beer's advice is correct - start with your frieds. But as I found out, that's not always enough. I did some research today and I think you can try:
- Google Adwords
- Create a group on other social networks such as Facebook and Bebo that "advertises" your own social network (you must make sure the Terms and conditions of Facebook say it's ok to do so)
- Look for similar and complementary sites to yours and offer a link exchange. If you are a social networking site for tennis players, there's not much sense in linking up with another social networking site for tennis players. Instead, you could link up with a site that sells tennis equipment. Make sure the sites you link up with are reputable and mature.
- Use print - create your own A4 sized posters and stick them up around universities (they will get pulled down by cleaners but try anyway). If you don't use glue or sticker the university should be okay with it unless they are really stingy. Use plastacine or masking tape so it's easy for cleaners to take off.
- NEVER pay for search engine submission. It doesn't work anymore.
- any more ideas?
I hope this helped.

Add something unique to your site, write a good press release and submit it to various newsletters, magazines...

Based on my experience, 'stealing' users from other social networking sites would be the best way. I'm sure you have friends, so why don't you create 'rumors' that will make them interested in checking your site. Don't tell them its your though, not now at least.
Once you get the words out, to the right people, everything will be downhill. Thats the beauty of social networking

You could also try to integrate with other social networks. Most have an open API for developers. This means, anyone with an account on the other site could automatically have one on yours. By working together, user's don't need to switch, they can have an augmented experience.

Depending on the size of your user base, you could start there. Is there something unique you can offer to get them talking

Hey AnnD, Congratulations on getting up and running.
My suggestions are, Submit your site along with it's unique title and popular keywords to all the search engines. If your funds are limited you can do the submittals yourself. Try around 100 a day. Do this in addition to the other great advice in this thread. Good Pluck

Find which forums, social networks, blogs of where your potential users hang out. Become part of that community by being engaging. Then you can ask them check out your site.
Good Luck!

The only question I would ask is - what is different about your social network then all of the other social networks? What is unique about your website?
I have read recent studies that today most people perfer not to get involved with to many social networks..why? because its just to much. Unless, its a social network thats really really unique, different and stands out. Because all social networks are basically the same thing. Unless you website is focusing on a niche.
Promote your site via facebook and myspace.

The first important thing you need to do is LINK BUILD it.
Promote it gradually in social networking site (just what i have said before!)

You need something that makes your site unique. It could be you only want internet marketers who do ebooks or only internet marketers from the UK or something like that. Get a niche focus and it'll be easier to build because you won't be targetting everyone and everything.

I'd also add that once you've figured out that unique quality (and really, it doesn't have to be all that unique, or even big -- it just needs to be something people are attracted to -- for good or ill) then you need to be consistent with updating your network, providing content, and keeping the momentum of conversation going. Social networks are so ubiquitous now that people won't bother joining if they don't see anyone there in the first place.

the usual suspects? would that be the kids who each have a list of 300 social networks ready to post any time someone says the word "uvavu" (an idea of the competition you face, ann)? or me and my anti-socialnetwork drive? (nice bit of a semi-pun in there).
i just had a great idea - a 100% porn social network. imagine the "I am ---" entries on THAT site. I'd like to give examples, but I feel certain it would be the duty of others to censor them out.
ann! if you have programmed this network yourself, well done! programmers are all cool, and making a social network is a brave bit of programming (since it has to be glossy above all) - if it looks too much like your forex site that'd be bad
ps why not promote it on your forex site - i presume it has traffic. why not start there? it's free, isn't it? and silly advice about starting with your friends is silly. a social network has to start in public, not privately, otherwise it's got the wrong ambience.
i think a frugality-network is going to be much more popular in 2009 than social networks have been in the pre-economic-collapse. we were in a boom. people were happy and wanted to overspend and live it up and spend time socialising all the time... this period is over, really. good programmers should not be left to burn, so that's why i say to you - go ahead with that project, sure, but consider something that can make good money. cycling-tips websites will do well in europe. i dunno what the USA will do to counter the vehicle industry collapse. your roads are a bit too big for cycles.
Anyway. There it is. I managed to make a comment about social networks which wasn't merely a total write-off of the entire niche! Only about 85%. Which is pretty lenient for me.
...wait a minute - the thread started in july 2008... by now that social network has either got off the ground or been buried.

It never hurts to film an inexpensive video advertisement to place onto youtube and vineo. That's part of what I do.

I almost forgot! In order to promote my site, I started a group on facebook. I know I know, that's nothing new. I made the group a bit more interesting, though, by hosting fun little contests and it seems to really be catching on. The prizes don't have to be big, either. As long as there's something to be had, people are all over it.
