Tough question. Free traffic huh?

I usually gain free traffic from search engine, link backs, forum posts, hmm...
you can virtually use anything to get free traffic, but you have to do it persistently. That's the key of gaining free traffic, being persistent

anyone wants to add?

The best free traffic source is Search Engines. Make your website visible on SEs; and you'll have faior flow of traffics.

If you want free traffic then ya got to do something for it.

Be aggressive and get yourself out there by learning how to:
1] use stumbleupon.com
2] Facebook for marketing
3] Internet forums
4] how to use onlywire.com
5] How to use Twitter
6] How to submit a press release to PR sites
7] How to write great article and submit them to article directories

Be careful not to confuse "free" traffic with "targeted" traffic. Some of the advice in this thread is very general. No matter what methods you adopt to gain traffic, if they are not focused on your target market you are wasting your time.

Typically, "Free" traffic is garbage and is just getting pinged from an IP server (not human)

However, if you market your idea or product to the right places on the internet that allow free advertising, such as link building sites, blogs, forums, and "other" (press release, comment submission, RSS feeds,etc) you can effectively drive enough "free" traffic. This traffic can be converted into $$$ if you target your marketing efforts to relevant websites that have higher quality, traffic, popularity, and reach.

remember free traffic is normally untargeted...except for forums.

But paid traffic is highly targeted...they are more likely to sign up and pay later, or buy straight away....its the whole risk to reward thing at play....but it took me many years to actually realise that to make money u just gotta spend it.

Articles and you tube videos are a good way to get free visitors.

Alot of people dont like to write articles or they dont know how.

If you have to hire a ghost writer the traffic isnt free anymore.

forums are good for getting traffic, myspace groups are another way I get free targeted traffic.

I havent really ever paid for traffic and I increase my visitors by 500 each month

free free free. it's possible to make money by being a miser, but much more reliable to make it by spending. save money. cut out cigarettes or something. do something to give you a piggy bank you can store 100s of dollars in. when you are ready, use them wisely.

paying for traffic means you can, if you are talented, increase traffic by 10s of 1000s a day! Once you start, you can learn to find the right path. There's a lot of money to be made out of traffic in 2008. if you wait for the traffic to come for free, you'll get it much more slowly, you'll probably miss the boat and when the time comes that you could have been rich, you'll still be poor.

all the money i made from free traffic is gone, and it never had a safeguard!
whereas what i buy... this is safeguarded completely. eg if my main supplier (google) is whipped by some competitor and destroyed, that very competitor will take over being my supplier (that's actually HOW they'll whip google!)

Free traffic - well, you need to get your site SE friendly - this traffic is free and also quality - you don't have to do anything else. But speaking of other resources, here they are:

1. Article Dirs.
2. PPC
3. Mailing list
4. Soc. Marketing
5. Gorilla marketing
6. Dirs. - some big
7. Blog comments - well written

........

1 Search Engines google, yahoo etc
2 Social networking, leverage your friends, etc facebook, http://www.digg.com
3 Ad Exchange sites http://www.adexchanged.com, entrecard if you're a blog
4 Blogs
5 Directories
6 E-mailing

There are lots of ways to increase traffic to your blog like signing up for Technorati, signing up with pinging services, post comments on other blogs in your niche, use of keywords in articles and blog posts etc. It all depends upon which one suits you the best.

Traffic comes from links and Google. If the links are free... it is free traffic. So get links.

Forums work well for generating traffic but they don't generate business for us. The only real source of visitors who become buyers is from search engines, but then we are a B2B site.
