how do i know where my visitors came from (e.g. search engine, another site) ????

All you need is a statistics counter/tracker to know where your visitors are coming from. Try www.statcounter.com (It's Free) Also check with your web host and see if you have access to Awstats. Proad

my host gives me access to awstats and webalizer stats...i usually look at the awstats, but is one considered better than the other by most people?

Awstats.

If you are lucky enough, you can use UrchinStats.
Your host should have installed it for you. It is costly, but its stats are effective.

If your site is using server pages you can get free script to monitor your site stats. just search "site visitor tracking" in google for more resource.

Use Nedstat Basic Website Counter. It's free and you can see all kind of information with it (ex. where do you visitors come from, when do they come, how did they find your website, ...).

I have one and I'm very pleased with it.

To all of you who put "awstats" as your response:

Does it properly track your country data? It did for me in the past, but my new server registers all hits' country data as "Unresolved/Unknown".

awstats seems to give a micture of proper country data and 'unknown' for me.

For those of you without access to server based stats, I'd recommend webstat.com as a good web-based one.

I just checked out WebStat.com... they do look pretty good!

Statcounter and awstats show the search term. I use both of them, regularly.

Here is an excellent CGI script you can use AVX Tracking System and you can download it for free at www.xav.com. You will know exactly where your visitor came from...included the URL they're referring

You might also want to check out http://extremetracking.com. It has all kinds of stats. It even tells you what country each visitor is from.

Awstats works pretty good for a website give the uniques/ unviewed traffic/ 404 and many other stats. I'm sorry to hear that your not getting this services through your hosting provider.. You may want to click on my signature.

Yes Awstats does seem to mis the country for some reason... Extremetracking may be a decent alternative to it - at least provides country stats

StatCounter looks great. I think I'm going to switch all of my sites over to that...

Anyone have an idea why Awstats sometimes has problems logging country data?
