In this trying times, will it be the most practical thing to do for a company to cut down his cost in marketing or more specifically SEO? What are your thoughts on this?

Personally I think it would be a bad idea. SEO is by far the most cost effective marketing technique. Companies would be better off redirecting their other marketing expenses towards seo efforts. Unfortunately a lot of business owners are still more comfortable doing things the way they were 20 years ago. Those types of business owners would be more inclined to use traditional marketing instead.

With recession sweeping across the world, people tend to restrict their expenditure and seo is no exception to get into the quagmire. At the most, one can allot a scaled down budget for it during the crisis...

I do agree with Jeremy, SEO is cost effective when compared to any traditional way of marketing. I think, global recession effect would be some what less on the SEO industry when compared to other Industries.

Right, but let's say that something in seo had to be cut (just playing along with the scenario)...what do you guys think it would have to be? I guess the question is really, which is the least crucial element of seo?

Definitely. SEO and affiliate are some of the best ROI things companies can do to market themselves in these days. Why pay CPM or CPC if you can get some great promotions via search engine result pages or your affiliate program partners.

From my opinion it's absolutely opposite. Businesses switch towards to online advertising and marketing during the recession due to lower costs as the major reason. A bright example is Tribune media company in the USA, which had serious financial problems after their core clients switched to alternative ways of advertising in the internet.

Lower costs for online advertising and marketing -- do you mean by the all companies in general, or these alternatives that you mentioned with Tribune?

If costs were to lower, then it would seem that Tribune would lower its costs as well.
