OK... SO this is a long one. Get your coffee, have your cigarette and sit down.
I was thinking about what my next project should be. I've decided I'm done with the small, somewhat successful sites that have no large amount of potential. I want something that can grow into something real.
So I came with some guidelines of what a large, successful site will most likely have characteristically -
Something most ANYONE can use - The problem with 99% of the websites on the net is the target market. Although many websites may appeal to many people, they almost never appeal to all people. I searched long and hard for websites that meet this requirement. The best one I found was search engines. Everyone needs to navigate through the web. Another thing I found was auctioning/review sites. These types of sites can go either way. Many people don't want to spend money on the net. But if the need arises and they find the best place is the net and a particular situation. They will buy what they're looking for on the net. And EVERYONE needs something.
Something that is useful - This ones obvious. No matter how well you advertise your site if it's not useful people stray away. They might come once but they won't come back. The uses of the site need to be apparent and great.
Something that is fun to use but may also be viewed as a necessity - Many people go to the web for fun, many use it to get the information they need. If you can find the correct combination of both then you can market to both types of people.
Has the ability to expand features easily while still keeping the main purpose of the website in tact. A great example of this is yet again a search engine. Yahoo offers hosting, forums, reviews, ads, etc. The main purpose of their website is to search and that is quite apparent but you can also use it for many, many other things.
So what's my question? What type of websites, besides search engines could fit into at least 3 of these categories?
So far I've gotten ideas for a sort of auction search site. You'd basically search for an item and it would pull auctions and sales form all major sites (ebay, amazon, i-bid, etc.) and give you the best of what you're looking for based on price, quality, etc. Everyone needs to buy something sometime, and everyone wants and needs to save money. It definitely leaves room for expansion. Products/companies sponsoring for their items to be ranked higher on our searches resulting in another source of revenue, and a few others.
I have 2 other ideas but I think I'll keep those for now.
SO yup any ideas?
