Directory submissions would be the least effective.

Article Submissions work well for Yahoo & MSN, but I don't think they help as much on Google.

Link building is the best strategy for Google if you know good ways to build links. You have to be good at finding relevant websites that are willing to link to you.

If you are creative, link baiting is an even better strategy, but tough to execute successfully.

I think you shouldn't waste your time on any of those options. Here are my big three:
  • Focus on making something that is both useful and quality for the long term and not the quick buck.
  • Focus on conversions and your bottom line, not on page rank, page views, or any other metric that doesn't affect the purpose of your site.
  • Focus on targeted marketing to people who can become users, clients, or customers and ignore every other type of marketing because it's a waste of time.

Do not focus too much on directories or article submissions. Build a great site with great content. Join social media like StumbleUpon and Twitter and reach your audience there. Write a great article and give it away as a guest post to one of the biggest blogs within your field. This will give you a great introduction to your audience and will give you a great quality link. Continue providing value articles to your visitors consistently.

none of them.. I only do them to build links to my sites, though, I do get some good traffic out of articles... directories, do people still use them for references?

I agree with the people here. Your site content, on site optimization and on site conversion rate are important. Once you stabilize your site, then for external SEO, I will say: link building is #1 (for Google), then article submission. Directory submission may also help. For example, for some sites, baidu.com and msn.com will drive some traffic. However, for Google, link building is still very important.
