External Links and E-Zines

I am embarrassed to say that I knew next to nothing about using ezines to create some external, albeit short term, links to your site. So I've been looking into that and trying to learn about the subject.

But my first question is this: is there a good way to find out which are the best ezines and most respected by Google for your general subject and content areas? I googled on ezine and found a bunch of ezine directories but how do I know if some of these Google will completely ignore.

I'm just asking because I hate to go to all the trouble to write an article, submit to an ezine only to find out that Google doesn't like the ezine site.

Any advice/help with this topic would be much appreciated...

Forget "what Google likes"

e-zines are for users. You know, the real people who are going to determine whether your site will be a success or an abject failure.

People who will sign up,
People who have credit cards to buy your products,
People who might click on your adverts,

SE crawlers don't do any of that! And NO, you don't need "rankings" to make any of that work, you simply need the right kind of promotion.

Interesting comments! I never really thought of ezines being advertising, almost a kind of free adwords.

But I still I go back to my original question: how in the world do I find ezines that people actually read? Again, I don't want to spend several hours writing an article for an ezine that has 4 readers? Is there any reasonable way to find out who's hot and who's not?

adwords is advertising.

Any time that you are posting links, submitting to directories, mentioning your site in forums, writing press releases, blogging, etc etc, you are advertising or promoting your site.

We cannot tell you what will be a truly successful promotional strategy. YOU have to work that out, because only you know your site, only you know what kind of people your site needs to attract.
Read the last paragraph of this post. That's what YOU need to know before you go looking for places to promote your site.

I read that and of course you're spot on. I'm kind of the technical type so I tend to think in terms of a magic formula, kind of a Maxwell's Equation for SEO that will solve everything. But, obviously, it's very site and goal dependent.

I know my audience pretty well from the letters I get: they're males between the ages of about 34 and 60 generally with mild to medium health issues. So I'll have to ponder that...

Being a programmer, I used to think like that. But after a year or so of trying the same formula on several sites and seeing the results vary from "that's great" to "so what happened there then" I started to treat each one as a "special case" and it got better.

An excellent start.
Find:
The places they "hang out".
The forums they probably read, for every human complaint/illness there is at least one .
The newsletters they read etc etc.

And this is where "mutual" linking starts to work best, it's a "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" scenario.
