Hi,

I am not an expert with the internet... But I try hard and work hard !

I have not a lot of visitors on my website (it's been online for about a week) and I was wondering if there were any free ways to bring visitors to our websites ?

I tried adword with Google, it's nice but it cost a lot of money on the long term !

Visitors and sites are different.
So, the approach taken depends upon your site and the types of visitors you want.

So,
Who do you want to visit your site?
What are the characteristics of these people?
What are their interests?
What about your site is appealing to them?

Once these questions are answered, then we can go about answering your question.

Hopefully this get in before all the bull5*t posts about articles, social media, directories, seo, and other mindless answers.

Depends on your site. Most folks find that traffic to be poor quality.

For me the best traffic comes from other developer websites

Start promoting your site through forum postings and blog commenting related to your theme. You just need a lot of patience and hardwork. Goodluck!

E-mail marketing isn't a good way for promoting sites.Its better to avoid it.

Sure enough, the social media part was right at your heels, so the grain of reason you've managed to drop in here is really appreciated. This is the point overwhelmingly missed out left, right and center, because the ultimate question to be answered is whether you need just traffic for its own sake (I will never get the point of traffic exchange, btw), or targeted traffic - people who are both interested in and capable of paying for your services/products.

Really do not know if its possible to get anything good free (I am in the same stage like You - new webmaster), but only can suggest thing what i found and what i use... I tried a lot... starting from Active traffic till Seo Wolf, but ... for me it was too expensive... finally found Warrior tools on www,warriortools.info. Of course You cant compare with these for 300$, but in the beggining its good and do all same things as expensive ones.

Well, "free" is a relative term.

There are many things you can do that will cost more time than money. So, you might say there are free options if your time has no value

The important thing is to clearly define your objective first. Once you have a clearly defined goal, you can invest your time (and/or money) in a way to get the maximum benefit.

For example, if your goal is to make your name more well known, then using things like social media can be beneficial. If you are trying to sell products, social media may not be the best use of time (unless it's some wacky new high tech kind of thing). If your plan is to get ad revenue, then you will want to find ways to have regular repeat visitors.

Probably the best advice I can give is to (temporarily) treat it like a brick and mortar. Define your goals, write a business plan. There's tons of freely available information online and off to help you with a business plan. Visit your local chamber of commerce and a local branch of the SBA. There are volunteers that can help as well as give advice.

You'll find that with a business plan, you will waste much less of your efforts, and obtain better results.

Quality content is most important way to increase traffic because content is "king" and u can do social bookmarking,article posting,press release submission,blog comment,yahoo ans,forum posting etc is help u to increase traffic and also increase back link as well.

i usually dont find any way to add bookmark in twitter. can u suggest me where is the option to add??

keep on building quality link to your site and take your site to among top ranking on google you will see the difference b'coz search engines are the best source of traffic also go through social bookmarking, classifieds, rss submission that will also help you to get traffic.

Not sure I understand the principles of using Facebook and Twitter to drive traffic.. can anyone ad a little more informantion. Do i start a group or something?

There are lots of possible ways to get traffic. All you need is to look at this list for your reference and check if you have done any of this yet.

Submission to SE's and directories
Article marketing
Email campaign
Forums, blogs and board postings
Social Bookmarking

Premium ways: (Should require a budget)
Pay-Per-Click (PPC)
Targetted Link backs
Professional SEO services
Ad spaces
Offline campaigns.

Twitter is not for increasing web traffic. Twitter is for sending messages to your friends

I think someone has said it but social networks is the best way to drive traffic to your site, also blogging and writing articles will bump traffic towards your site
