What is your business all about? Have you created your website for you to get started?

This is just one way: create a site and write about something you have expertise in/are passionate about. Build up traffic to your site. Monetise that traffic in some way or other. Note that you need the traffic before you can do any monetisation. The monetisation may take different forms, but the be all and end all is the traffic. Generally, the more traffic you get the greater the likelihood of success - though not always.

If you write lacklustre rubbish that can be found anywhere - as most website owners do - you will probably fail. Hence the need to write about things you are passionate about or have expertise in.

Another idea is to buy and run an existing website that currently makes a profit - but I'd only recommend doing that when you've learnt the ropes (perhaps from the above adventure).

You have different options:
  • write comprehensively enough about something and you will get "long tail" traffic. Some of that traffic will link to your content if it's good enough. Those links will help you rank for more terms and get you more traffic. This is usually a long and slow process.
  • Buy advertising on high traffic sites, making sure that the site is very related to yours
  • Buy links that help you rank higher (search engines don't like this)
  • Use other sites you own to link to other sites you own if they're related
  • Other methods you might get lucky with but might work out to be a huge waste of time like social bookmarking, or traditional article marketing (the duplicate content variety) that I wouldn't recommend.
