I am new to all this website and blogging stuff. I am aware that one needs to be actively engaged in building links over time if you want your site to rise up in terms of page rank or authority which would eventually bring you good traffic and rank higher in search engines.

I scraped through many forums for finding good link building strategies.

Everywhere I found "SOCIAL BOOKMARKING" as an essential weapon in the war of building links.

But to this day, I am wondering what exactly this social bookmarking is and how does it help building links? I really don't know how to use social bookmarking to build links. How should I approach this strategy?

go to _socialposter.com, put in your website information and push Start Posting. Then you`ll have your site posted to several social bookmarks. If they are dofollow - your site`s pr will grow. Everything is simple)

You should be very careful.

Most of the people using social bookmarking to "build links" are ruining the social bookmarking sites. Get in with that crowd and you'll find yourself labeled as a spammer. You could find frequent DOS attacks to your site from groups of people trying to stop the "social link drop spammers".

But everyone mentions that it is a good way to build links! Then are they all spammers? I have searched so many good forums, Digitalpoint and sitepoint to point some of them.

Well, yes

Think about it. What is the reason social bookmarking sites exist? So people can share links with their friends. So that can share interesting pages (if you like lolcatz).

Using the sites to simply spread your links around is an obvious mis-use.

OTOH, if you are creating genuinely interesting content, then you could find the sites to be useful. But, you have to be very careful here.

If you stop getting links from social bookmarking sites just think what the hell we would do! I do not think it is spam at all because till now no site has been banned because of using this technique.

Don't really trust on Social Bookmarking for building links. Doing article submission, press release, link exchange, directory submission etc can help you in getting backlinks. Take care of relevancy and quality and you are expert in this field.

It would be so nice if you could justify your statement of not trusting social bookmarking for building links. I have seen several forums talking about link building strategies and everyone includes link building as one of the strategies.

So how am I supposed to believe you. Please help me. Thanks.

social bookmarking is surely quickest way of generating traffic,you just register and submit your links with detail content and put meta tag showing all your keyword.and you are done.

I also heard that posting the same articles in all bookmarking sites harms you as far as google is concerned. What about this? Should you change your articles as you go on posting them in social bookmarking sites?

Social bookmarking site is only helpful to increase traffic but not all of them can give targeted traffic.

Even if I post them in relevant categories on these bookmarking sites, am I not going to get the targetted traffic?

I completely agree with willcode4beer. It was easy to build backlinks with social bookmarking a few years ago. Back then, those sites were less sophisticated and far fewer people knew how to take advantage of them to promote their own sites. Now it's much harder.

I've done enough of it by now to tell you that it's all about quality and not quantity. I've posted many links on many sites. Most of them have given me nothing back. Some do great. I now have a pretty good idea of which links to post and which ones to skip.

If you post a link to a quality article that is funny, original, useful or interesting, you will pick up some clicks and valuable backlinks. Otherwise, your time is better spent on other tactics.

Digg and Reddit have banned thousands of sites
