You can't just pick keywords and expect them to help. The keywords have to be in your content and titles as well. This might be helpful when looking http://www.submitexpress.com/analyzer/ it tells you what words come up the most in your page and what your keyword relevancy is
You should use this one. If you want to rank high in Google, you should use Google's data. Type in the main keyword that you want and the Google will supply related keywords with monthly searches and average searches.
To check the competition, type the chosen keyword into Google with quotes. e.g. "dog training" and you can see the competing websites that have exact the term. If it is under 5,000 then that is a very useful keyword to target.
I realise that its not a case of just changing my keywords.... This is why im trying to figure out the best ones so i can then change the whole site to target those.

Hi lynxus! Try to use the Google keyword adwords tool they suggested.
But before you even try to use it, try to brainstorm first with someone else on what are the possible main Keywords that is best for your site.
After that you use the tool to get more keyword phrases (3 to 4 words per KW) that are not so much highly competitive. They go over your page again to see if you can revise it for optimization.
