In my own experience of social networking over the last several years, it can become an addiction that wastes way more time than it is worth. You really should think of it as any other investment (ROI) because time is money.
I can say I have made come really good connections through social networking sites (twitter, linkedin, facebook are the only ones I use anymore) but it took me 18mos of experimenting with different ones to see that I was really wasting time.
Any links you get from those sites are usually worthless, although if you have a loyal following, you could get some traffic from posting links. I currently get 5-6% of my traffic from twitter, but none of it has converted to sales of my products.
But the networking part of it can be beneficial over time (it takes time to get people on these networks to trust you). I made one connection through twitter that has benefited me because he has a high traffic home improvement site (my products are for mainly DIY type customers) and links to me from his front page in a highly visible spot (he also links from smaller sites he owns to mine). He also wants me to guest post some articles for his site which gets 3k+ visitors a day. Not huge but substantial targeted traffic that may boost traffic a visibility of my own site.
I have also made good connections through LinkedIn, examples being I needed manufacturers of products for my website that would dropship anywhere in the US so I wouldn't have to carry an inventory, made two connections on LinkedIn that were more than happy to help me.
So in conclusion, if you are looking for backlinks, don't waste your time, if you are trying to actually network (hence the name "social networks") then it can work if done properly.

In my opinion, you may try Twitter as SEO tool. As FenceGuy said, links from these sites are somewhat worthless. But, if you can manage your script to work with Twitter API, you might have some traffic. I have 300-400 clicks from my Twitter account (1300 followers, 45000 tweets) everyday, and plus 400-500 more from Twitter agregates (sites that generate twitter posts). Twitter in near future will be Realtime Search Engine, and it's time to think about it.

The real time search with twitter will change things for sure, but I also think it will take away from the ones that like twitter for what it was intended, interaction. The amount of people flocking to twitter only to promote "self" is getting out of control and it is turning people off because of spammy self promotion and "make money on twitter" BS. If we are not careful, there will not be anyone left that wants to actually discover information and only those that send promotional links out....who will click them then?

I used it by submitting social bookmarks to get backlinks. Try to find social networking site that has good PR and gives indexed.

For my own opinion, social networking is one of the off page SEO technique wherein you can really get a huge amount of traffic to your site because we all know that there are millions of users are always online in those social networking sites like facebook and twiter. It's better to have a new content everyday in your site then post its url on those social network sites to be seen by a lot of users.

Some advatages of social networking
- Refined Search: only social networking sites offer internet users with a search directory that you can use to locate particular individuals or groups. You can search by categories like location, industry, interests and other unique preferences. This way, you do not waste your time and resources establishing connection with people you and your business have nothing in common with.
- Affordable visibility: since most of these social networking sites are free, you should maximize them. Make sure that the profile you created will be interesting for the readers. Also, you should make it more personalized by adding interesting articles, images, videos and even reviews of your products.
- Receptive Members: the concept of social networking sites lies on the premise that members have at least one thing in common. Because of this, it is not surprising that you will receive messages from people you do not really know or likewise, you could be interested in establishing contact with some of the members who might interest you.
- Built-in Group: starting a discussion is not difficult with social networking sites compared to growing one on your site. With the millions of visitors and members, you will have no problem with attracting participants. Discussion groups are also the best place to do some soft selling. You can accomplish this by lending your expertise on particular subjects.
- Expand Network Easily: the key to establishing a successful online business is being visible to other people outside your network. The fact that you are connected to these people because of an existing connection with one of your contacts, make you more trustworthy. Compared to approaching someone on the street, social networking sites would provide you with considerable marketing advantage.

Just a simple question.
Do any of you know WHY "social networks" exist and what their intended use is?

I think social networks exist to connect people with their friends who are sometimes far away and also to make friendds with same interest and share thier views and thoughts with each other and also to save time.
But the thing is people use them more in their own way to promote business , adverising, SEO. linkbuilding nowdays.
Am I right?

I hear a lot of people say they are good for keeping in touch with online friends and relatives but you can do that with an email or an instant message.
I mean if you like making profiles, having an online journal and putting up photos that people can look at then i guess social networking sites are good but other than that their is really nothing to do on those sites and to be honest i find them really boring.

Keith... if only more people knew that....
What Chris is implying is that for the majority of the posters here - It's means;
"try and spam as many sites as possible in a vain attempt to gain another (pointless) backlink - thus polluting the internet more than it already is"

I don't think social networking should be used in the world of optimization.
In fact the only thing I have ever used social networking for in relation to webmastering is to meet like-minded webmasters, who may turn out to offer great advice/opportunities.
I believe they call that networking...

No No No!
What you do is find a place you can dump as many links as possible to get poor unfortunates to visit your crappy turnkey MFA junk site and leave via the adverts, and you carry on abusing the same sites until everybody is so P!$$ed off with the junk they don't use SM any more.
Then of course you move on to the next "big thing" and start to kill that off as well.
It's what keeps "SEO" "fresh" and "up to date"

Social networking is a phenomena defined by linking people to each other in some way. It is advertising.
