I've read that article submission has no positive or negative effect on SERPs results. Is that true? and what are the pros of directory submission?

I can only speak through experience. Article Submission has helped me a little (so far) in the SERPs - not that much though. However, I do get referral traffic - and I'm getting the word out there about my sites. Basically called promoting websites.

Directory submissions - forget them.

It works well if you use sites with do follow links, recently google penalized alot of these sites in order to make them run no follow tags. Thats why that technique doesn't work as well as before, but its still an effective way of marketing. Just right real good content and they will click through.

If you can get referral traffic, great. Don't pay attention to the "do-follow" links, these links are so deep that they won't do much to help you.

Article "submission" will have absolutely no effect on anything at all.

Actually have them accepted and published for others to steal see might have though.

IMO, article and directory submission do play an important role in SERPs results but it totally depends on how you will do that work. Suppose you are submitting an article which is already indexed in search engine then it won't give you any benefits, however if you are writing a unique content with few hyperlinks of your website then you will definitely get results from them. For directory submission, you should keep a constant number, for eg. if you will submit in 100 directories today and next day no submission is done then search engine will consider it as spamming however, if you will keep it constant like 30 submissions a day then it will definitely boost your ranking.

How true that is Chris. EZA has a counter of ppl that take your articles - and a lot of ppl out there do take. Sometimes, I feel like I'm helping these lazy idiots out - but I signed on - knowing that this will happen.

Randomly submitting an article here or there is probably not going to be effective. To create, generate results in article submission, you really need to take significant action and create goals that encourage consistency.

Why is a link in Article better than link in directory? I haven't seen any proof that link in page having more characters will be better for SERP than a link in the page with less characters.

Articles submission is beneficial if you are using do follows sites and in proper category. After approval you should do social bookmarking for that.
