The people who expound these theories on getting banned are just talking out of their backsides!
They all think far too SMALL.
Search Engines deal in HUGE numbers. Lets do a bit of elementary maths.
Just for ease of calculation lets say there are 200 indexers and each one can handle a page every second (very, very slowly in computer terms).
So that is 12,000 pages a minute being checked, 720,000 per hour, 17,280,000 every day. And I would suggest that you could easily increase that by a magnitude or 10 for the actual indexing speed.
In that kind of volume a couple of hundred links to any particular page in any one day would be a statistically insignificant number.
AND do NOT forget these are probably the same people who:
Advocate posting articles Digg, Technorati, Delicio.us etc where it is possible to gain hundreds of links in a few minutes.
Suggest you should "ping" the feed aggregators, so your "feed" will be picked up quickly, it may then get published immediately to thousands of syndicated sites.
Once you realise that most of the "advice" is contradictory it becomes very easy to pick out the accurate info.
