I'd like to rent a list of email addresses targeting email recipients who may be interested in shopping and clothing. I've tried one such service so far, but the have not done much to increase my conversion rates. Any ideas?

There are many things you can do, but because your niche is shopping and clothing you will probably have better conversions using social media sites such us facebook and twitter. Start a profile with your company name and start inviting friends/followers. Create groups and use the socializing aspect of these sites to spread the word. Give discounts and coupons and you will begin to see a turn out. Email marketing works as long as the lists are opt-in and targeted. Otherwise you will be wasting money.

The recommended way to do email marketing is to build your own list.

Using other people's lists whether obtained via purchase, rent or free will not give the desired results. You will never be sure how the list was complied. And you risks to be seen as spamming.

People like to find products themselves rather than passively receive products information.

Email marketing is a very risky way to make money online, one single mistake and you mail will land up in the junk mail section or the spam folder. There are systems which will provide you free email leads, all you need to do is just google them and trace the trusted ones.

Totally agree. Your lists always has the best conversions because they are being nurtured for and they are the ones that has the most interest in what you have to offer...

Instead of trying to send unsolicited mails, have you thought of sponsoring other people's newsletter? That way your links will be placed in their article sending traffic to your landing page.

This works like charm, so give it a go and see it works for you too.

Just make sure when you are obtaining such a list, that the broker is giving an actual "recent buyers" list. This means that the people on this list have recently purchased something similar to what you are selling.

If you are buying just a subscriber's list you won't see much of a good results.

Also you can not rent the list you will have to buy one and it get pretty expense

Email marketing is a continuous on-going process! You need to keep the follow up of each and every mail sent by you. People who have put you on ignore list must not be sent the mails again. And people who gave a positive response should not be left un-followed.

Yes. You can only do opt-in email marketing. The content of design of your email is very important for conversion.
