I read in an article that one should avoid splitting of links.
Links that come from outside shall have same url as internal links of the same landing page.
What does that mean?
I am quite confused

It means that links should point to to the same URI rather than some to the index page name and others to the directory root.

Nope , it is necessary to have an index page.

Just don't link to it.

A split link is a link that has a 2-sphere in its complement separating one or more link components from the others. It means that links should point to to the same URI rather than some to the index page name and others to the directory root.

The importance of creating the perfect link which will not allow the splitting of the link with the another link, but if a page has to many links coming from it, So it can splitting available "link juice" too much and may not be worth the trouble. This tends to happen a lot with forums, commenting on blogs, and directories.

The links splitting should be avoided as it should point to the Url only. Otherwise it leads to nonperformance of the pages in the website. We should always try to do links as the same url it is much batter for the ranking and quality.

Note that whether a link is split or non-split corresponds to whether the link complement is reducible or irreducible as a 3-manifold.
