Usually while exchanging links, i ask for contextual link. But there are site wide links, footer links, text links, banners, etc.
I request for link on the relevant page or section of the website than site wide links.
Which one is the best ?

Try them all, check your site logs to see which refer the traffic that converts.

I think you should start with directory submission, Article Submission and Blog Commenting with do-follow attribute and see how traffic is moving. So that you get idea which activity has to follow regularly and alternatively so that you can do some experimental which can derived traffic.

What is your definiation for "is better" ? You want better Ranking on SE or you want Goals Completed in your Website ?

Contextual Links related to your website would be good... Also, Text links.

Do not stick with sitewide links.

To me home page link is best.As I have seen getting back link from home page will show that you got backlinks from the whole site.You may use yahoo site explorer to explore this.

A link from the left or right hand side of the website is always better than footer link. But I personally suggest link exchange is not good rather you can do one way link building.

From my experience, Contextual links are always better. Think about it. Are you more likely to be interested in something that is in the context of the page or some picture over on the side or at the bottom? More than likely you went to the website to read the article to begin with, so the link in the content that is related to the article is more likely to get seen. That is what I have seen at least...

Well if it's more visible, it's going to get more clicks. But for SEO, it won't have an effect.

links on the upper left are the best since they can easily be recognized. And as many SEOers say, Google weighs these links heavier.

Contextual Links are valuable as it involves your target keyword phrase and if only you get for relevant sites in your niche they add quality and help in PR.

The best way to judge whether which type of link exchanges works the best is to test them out.

I fully support what Chrishirst has shared over here.

Basically, it is hard to gauge and it also differs for different niches.
