Im thinking of starting a forum and i was wondering how i can get lots of traffic for free ???

Find forums that are related to it, and start posting there (with your link in your signature, of course!) Don't just advertise your own forum, though. Become a knowledgeable, respectful member of the group, and people will start visiting your site.

Write some articles on your niche, and in the resource box, encourage people to share their thoughts on your forum.

Do some guest blogging on related sites (again, with your link at the bottom). If people like what they see, they'll be inclined to visit your site.

There are many social network bookmarking for free. You can post your link there and post your link to the right niche. And join a forum with a related topic for your site and of course don't forget your link as your signature. In the forum you can advertise your site by giving some helpful topics that they can see in your site.

Promote your forum in social media, have some interesting information on it, share the knowledge, post usefull things, share the links with your friends, colleagues, family, etc. And you will get traffic.

Forums are different than regular websites and need a strategy to get the regular users. You can do following to get the traffic
have dofollow signature links in your forum for new members
make categories/subforums to attract users in your niche
promote your forum at other forums
do ask for exchange links
do ask for exchange posts/threads
hire freelancers to do content writing for your forum
have strict forum rules/moderation to avoid spam
have high quality content/post to get the organic traffic from SE

There are a number of ways to do it but it depends on the quality of traffic you want. I would suggest that you take your time and make people WANT to come to it ... the rest will take care of itself.

You can do forum posting in related to your forum site... Start participating to there threads and be active and soon post the link of the forums on your signature..

On another note, the reason you arent getting the signatures of many people, because they dont know why they should. No action have little to text or information about what benefits there are to sign up. Traffic you are getting now and then when you convert more traffic will change as more comes well.

You can create a loads of traffic for free through the forums as above post mentioned by inserting the link,as well can be done by blog commenting where we can put the same as the link we are putting on the forums because of this the visitor if he is interested will visit the site apparently will get the free traffic,other way is in social bookmarking.
