Help. I have some people here who want to post our site in any free directory listing they find and think worthwhile. I am saying no for a number of reasons: no strategy, no investigation, no monitoring, and I believe the willy nilly approach does more harm than good. We are an educational institution--any opinions--am I just being too careful?
If they think the links are worthwhile, then where's the problem?

Yes directories do help if you submit to the right ones. Be carefull because some directories will spam your website and may cause a bigger problem. Links are good but they need to be relevent to what your website is about not just any topic or keyword. They ones I found are good is Dmoz,searchsight,exactseek, somuch.com and jayde and many others just to name a few.
