Pretty much this. If you have a fan page for your site you can let it grow naturally, which it will (very slowly) or buy some fans for it. When I first started the fan page for my site I hit the wall at around 100 fans. I bought some fans and got my number close to 900 in a couple of days. That helped with "street cred" if you will because when people see a page with a lot of fans they're more likely to join. Over the past couple of months the fans that were in that batch have left and new ones have replaced it and I'm up past 3000 fans now. It's not much, but when I post an article to the fan page I can generally expect a solid 500-1000 hits to be generated from it and many times they spread it to their friends, etc, which is the whole point. Plus it's free so it's all good.
The only other way to do this is to make a fan page with a catchy name that a bunch of retards will like just because it has a catchy name then let it grow and then turn it into a place to market your site. Only problem with that is about 99% of the people won't care about your site and all your fans will start leaving once you start pimping links.
