I guess I'm just an honest guy or something but buying backlinks never seemed to cross my mind. A couple of months ago somebody put their website up for sale on another forum and wanted over $100,000 for it and claimed it was making about $70,000 each year. The person who was selling it sounded like an "average joe" that found their success on the internet. I greatly admire people for their success and hope that one day I'll be in their shoes but I'm no so sure whether I would be willing to cheat to get there. Since I knew that person's website was successful, I decided to do a backlink check on their site to see how they go to the top of the search engines. After analyzing their backlinks, it seems that almost all of them were either in somebody's blogroll or were on a page that looked like a link farm. Some of the blogroll links actually said "Sponsors" or "Sponsored Links" instead of blogroll. Hmmmm.............Maybe I should quit being so honest.....?????

P.S. I actually found a top SEO firm that had similar backlinks. Their only natural backlinks seemed to be from some of their clients who they did web design work for.

Those that sell advertising? Actually, come to think of it, even Google buys advertising, e.g. their SuperBowl commercial.

Yes, but Google only considers it advertising if the links are "nofollow".

Untrue:

Search Engines have been able to tell which paid links are genuine advertising and which ones are bought for "ranking" or "PR" purposes LONG before the rel="nofollow" was developed.

I think almost all owners of successful websites buy backlinks and pay a lot for advertising.

That's why Google encourages people to report those who are buying links. I wouldn't be the guy reporting them but I'm sure there are many out there who will.

When I say PR I mean "pagerank".

Page Rank: As in the Google only "popularity measurement?

Or

pagerank: As in where a page appears in the SERP?

You don't believe one affects the other? It's been shown that Alexa boosting has yielded SERP increases. Why wouldn't PR boosting do the same?

Alexa is great, since I installed the alexa toolbar my ***** has grown 2 inches, next I am hoping it increases visitors to my site.
