I think the "SEO press releases" as you called them will not be approved by editors of press release sites. They examine press releases carefully before approving and posting. They will not allow to post any advertisement or SEO spam. I advice you to write press releases for readers (for people ) but not for search engines.

Press Release are still important for SEO purpose and more i would say for marketing purpose. And basically it is for announcement of new product launch. But SEO people use it for their on marketing purpose. And editors do approve it.
