See to it that you have a fully functioning website by making sure that your tags are in place and no broken links. Submit an XML sitemap to Google and other popular search engines:

MSN and Live are one and the same
Lycos and AltaVista were top dogs in 1995/1996 but are both owned by Yahoo!.

As for the rest of the pay-per-click engines they didn't produce useful results TEN years ago.

I agree with this point though. Well placed backlinks can help generate immediate traffic and in time may help with SEO. And of course, using content generators and copying from other sites is never a good idea.

Creating RSS Feeds is also useful in letting visitors keep up with your site updates.

Use YouTube videos as additional dynamic content at the same time making your site more interactive by adding 'likes', bookmarking tools or 'share this' and other widgets.

Use the power of subscription to Usenet groups as you may be allowed to advertise there. No where else better to start with than Google groups. Just make sure to subscribe to appropriate groups and make sure you DON'T spam.

If you read most forums backlinks are the biggest issue just keep on writing and posting good quality articles and keep building backlinks like anything else it takes time and perseverance.

I would say article posted on high-quality website can bring you with abundant traffic. It is pretty amazing once the article gets posted on the like website. Just like Cnet, you know, gains high PR with high traffic.
