Hi Guys
I often see people recommending listing in the directories.

I do not understand this yet.
I mean, surely being on Bing and Google is enough.
Who uses these other 100 directories ?

An explanation would be great!

And just 100 directories?? there are THOUSANDS of them, with 99% of them offering absolutely no value whatsoever.

Yeah don't bother with them.

You may get some benefit from Dmoz.org and Yahoo Directory though inclusion to the former can take months and you may easily be declined and the latter will cost you a few hundred $ if I remember rightly...

there are many premium directories which have loads of hits coming to their website daily. If you get listed in those websites then you will start getting traffic immediately. Good directories are the best way to build instant traffic to a website.

Already there are number of outbound links are there so logically such pages do not has that much value from search engine point of vies.

For directory submission. I agree with Tomlynch saying above. Quality directory websites will give a certain value to your website.

Directory submission used to be one of the more popular link building techniques that people used to boost their search rankings. Today, they say that this stuff no longer value to your site. For me, they are still useful if done properly because it could still create a diversified link profile that can rank you well for certain key terms.

To get the traffic and index in the search engine you must submit your website in high rank web directory. You can give the Title of your website, Description, URL of your website. when crawler come on that directory they read the title, description and URL of that website. In SEO directory submission is the basic step to get more traffic and ranking. There are many good rank free web directory on the internet that allow you to submit website.

I would disagree. Nobody knows exactly how Google works. I've seen my websites go from page 3 to page 2 with directory submissions. I've even gained some PR. Obviously the top directories such as Yahoo, Dmoz and BOTW are the best, but you shouldn't count out the smaller ones. Some backlinks is better than NO backlinks. And since the administrators of directories usually manually approve submissions, this could tell Google that your website isn't a spam website.

P.S. Make sure you use longer UNIQUE descriptions when you submit. In other words, write your descriptions by hand.

According to me directory submission is the best way to get permenant backlinks. Your website listing in direcotry with good PR will surely help you to get traffic and ranking.

And you KNOW this is due to "directory submissions" because????

Using "rankings" is not a measure of anything useful, they can go up or down by using a different broser on the same machine.

Submitting to directories is a great way to build links and increase your search engine rankings. In semi-competitive industries it can produce great results. If you add article creation and social media marketing into the link building equation then you can achieve great results for any industry.

Well, I don't know this for a fact, but I still don't believe you should ignore directories. If you're skeptical about the lower-quality directories, then just stick with the higher-quality, high PR directories that charges. This includes the Yahoo Directory and BOTW. There are also many other high-quality directories that charge as little as $10 for a lifetime link.

There is something that none of you quite seem to "get".

For a page to have "value" to pass on through links, it has to have "value" passed to it by, and from other pages that link to it.

The vast majority of directories ONLY EVER HAVE LINKS TO THE "HOME" PAGE, so by the time this "passed value" has filtered down the navigation structure and each time being divided by the number of links on each page it reaches. The "value" arriving on the page where your link is so small it makes little or no difference.

This is NOT the useless SGB PR number. For Google the real value (the so-called "link juice") of links to your page is the anchor text they use.

Is it worth the $299? I think it would depend on your client base, but there is so much "free" only time methods that I find it hard to believe as a start up you would invest in $299 on Yahoo.
