I am planning to launch a new forum within the next few weeks, it is nearly finished and waiting mostly for the logo now.

That being said I will migrate over some members from a similar forum I own so that should get me a couple hundred of members to seed with.

I would also like to run a contest. I saw Lee Dodd (very successful community/forum owner) have alot of success with this method.

The forum is for an MMORPG game. So of course the prizes would be gamer hardware (gaming keyboard, gaming mouse, mousepads, whatever I can get).

I am reaching out to alot of gaming hardware manufacturers now so lets see how this goes.

So that leads to my questions:

Have any of you started a forum/website with such a promotional contest?
Is it really difficult to get free items from companies for the promotion?
How did you promote the contest itself?
What other advice could you give in this area?

Thanks!
