It depend since it makes only a portion of the SEO so just putting an ad and awaiting that flock of people would swarm your website will backfire and disappoint you.

Somehow I feel that is true. Although it may be true that Facebook ads are quite effective as you can choose your geographical area for distribution, I would rather go for the page or group and even create a catchy app if you need more people. Also, Facebook is not quite relevant for the conversion, as not all the people who will click on the ads will go further for a buy or at least see what your website is all about as they can easily get distracted by Facebook (and we must accept that FB can be quite time-consuming)

I think with any PPC campaign a lot depends on your target audience, quality of your copy etc etc.

However, when I was organising a Smiths Disco I thought FB ads would be the perfect way to advertise - I could set it to only show up to people who "like" the band and live in my city - sounded good.

But I spent about £50 (~US$70) and got ZERO attendees from it.

That said, I found out about a music festival via FB adds and bought 2 tickets @ £90 each - so it CAN work, but it's very hit and miss.

facebook has just changed the timeline feature and made it compulsory... how much do you think facebook is reliable for marketing? how can we be sure that they are not going to change the rules every couple of months?

Its never an assurance that once you posted it on fb.ads it will be popular. It still depends on the company.
