Hi,

Just wondering what ORIGINAL ideas people have come up with for promoting websites. I mean we've all heard of the search engines and all the normal stuff, it would be good to get some ideas from other people.

I have not started this yet, but what I hope will work for my site (music downloads) is to give away lots and lots of free CDs containing lots and lots of MP3's from the bands that I sell on the site. The CDs will contain their own player and will have a button to link the listener straight to the bands profile page if clicked on. The CDs will be distributed through various independent record shops, clubs, gigs etc. The best bit is the bands will be helping to find places to distribute the CDs, all we have to do is produce them and send them out.

What do you guys do?

Add your file to a P2P file share network. Put URL in the title. If your file is popular, people will see your URL.

you could take out a permenant marker and go in every public toilet you pass writing your website on the bck of the cubical doors. (just an idea)

Right, I should have added 'legal methods only please' to the post!

As for the P2P one, a good idea but unfortunatly the majority of the files from the site are paid-for so I couldn't put them on one of these networks, I could put the free tracks on them but I'd prefer not to really.

Any more ideas?

make your ebay account yourdomain.com and sell related products.

Heres an easy one - when you have your site up put a link to it in you sig, and sign up with other related forums too and post about the band.

on google answers if you answer a question with a relevent address it gives a high google ranking.
So if someone wanted to know about cheap fruit and you had a website which sold fruit then you could answer the question with a link to your site and get a top 5 ranking! Easy!

-Should i post that in SEO?

Thanks for the ideas. Padawan I will be adding my url to sigs once the site is up and running properly and I do a lot of talking on related site (by the way it's not just for one band but for lots). This would also be very good for me if the idividual artists had links in their sigs too... Imagine if I had 50 artists (around 50 interested at the moment), each had 4 members who used the internet regularly, thats 200 people, each qith a link in their sig. Now if they post 10 messages a day each that'll work out to 14,000 links a week! Wow, now that would be good!

thevirus, unfiortunatly I cannot sell my digital downloads on eBay as it is against their rules and my contracts only give me permission to distribute through the website or free CD's. But, I could start selling mp3 players and the like. I used to do this for a DVD website I ran and didn't get a significant amount of traffic from it, but then again I did not have a very large catalogue and every item was also on eBay anyway, and cheaper!

The google answers idea is a good one, never thought of that. I might look into it.

Any other ideas?

So the trick is to ask a question about your site with one account, then answer your own question with another!

I have never used Google answers before but don't you have to pay to get your answer or something like that? Ideally I'd want any methods I use to promote the site to be ethical, I mean if anyone found out about that they would soon spread the word I'm sure, especially knowing my luck!

Funnily enough SitePro news have an article about it on their homepage, http://www.sitepronews.com/. The article is titled "A Back Road Loophole For Getting a Top Google Ranking". I understand what you mean now. I only had a quick look, but couldn't see any questions that would work for me, I'll keep an eye on it though.
