im starting up a new forum and coming up with ways to get it going.

does giving users free advertising on the site in exchange for posts sound like a good idea.

ie 1000 impressions for 10 posts or something. i understand it takes time and lots of advertising but has anyone seen any good ideas for getting a forum off the ground.

just to clarify, re. advertsing for posts: the posts would have to be informative and not just dribble to get the free advertising.

Sounds like a good idea. I would do it.

Another possibility would be to offer a post exchange with another forum - you both make a similar number of posts and new threads over a certain period of time - this has started working well for the one in my sig.

Advertising sounds a good idea but it would also depend on how many hits you got in the first place as to how many impresssions you could offer others. If you have to get 1000 impressions for each post then that doesn't seem like a winner.

I am no expert but I believe some people starting out do post swapping, where they post on your forum in exchange for you posting on theirs. It may not generate loyal users but it does fill it with content.

There are specialist forums on running a forum and www.theforumzone.com is a good one if you want to get deeper into it.

From using forums myself I always like a kind of ranking system like they have on this site, I am a junior talker at the moment but I encouraged to post more to become a skilled talker or whatever...

I am having the same problem, I have people telling me how they like the site and I am getting good feedback, but not getting members or posters. I think the you post for me I post for you idea so post the link to your site and maybe we could set something up.

I would have to say that the Atlantic area is a very big place, and what do you mean what is going on...What is going in in the clubs, businesses, car dealerships?

Focus more on each categorie, provide more decriptions, and give people something to talk about. (You should even consider starting each forum with your own thoughts, kind of an ice breaker to get people talking)

Politics This forum is for anyone who would like to discuss how they feel about political issues in the Atlantic Area. Does the mayor really need a 40,000 cherry oak desk? Do you feel our governer really speaks for the citizens of the Atlantic Area.

Education Do you feel like our schools are safe for our children? Do you feel like teachers are providing more one on one with "other children" and not yours? Discuss education matters here.

There are so many ways you can expand your forum and give people more to talk about.
