If I owned, say, a text-link exchange, and wanted to give a good first impression on my site, how legal would the following on my home-page be?

+ "Exchange ratio of 4:3 - That's 50% more than *Leading competitor's name here*!

+ "Exchange ratio 4:3 - That's 50% more than 2:1 exchanges"

Would the first one be legal if correct?

As as you aren't lying about them, I don't think you would have any major problems.

One think you might want to do is modify the name slightly, so that you aren't actually using the company name, but people will know what you mean. (Eg. Eb*y, G00gle, etc.)

That's what I thought, if you're being truthul. And a good idea about the naming - thanks.

Hey i like the second one. Reason: see, your setting your feet in a funda where the more no. of members you have, the easier it is to get new members. Now, the leading competitor obviously has several more members than you do. So, if you give away his name, a person, unaware about this competitor, goes visit their site, and bingo, you lose a chance to get a member.

Secondly, people love number, and the second one has two more digits

Thanks very much for your input there; I think I will do the second one.

It's interesting you should mention losing members to competitiors. We're actually considering linking to our competitors, just as a way to say, "look, we're better than them. And them. And them".

But that's another story...
