A site map is not essential but, as you have stated, it does aid the spiders in indexing your site. Also, as your site grows you may not have space to link to every page from your homepage. Addditionally, a site map will aid visitors in navigating your site, especially if it grows much larger over time.

As long as you have a simple navigation structure, and all your pages are within two clicks of your homepage, you don't really need a sitemap. Sitemaps are only necessary for very large sites with a navigation structure that may confuse visitors and search engine spiders.

Site map does one wonderful thing is that it places all your pages only two clicks away from the home page. This increases the search engine relevancy. Although its not necessary, if fact i've not used it in any of my sites, its not a bad idea either.

Adding your site map to any 404 pages is also a good idea.

mystic, I think site maps are a great idea. Linking to one from every page on your site not only insures faster indexing of new pages (when added to the site map), but helps the web site visitor. As we all know, the visitor is the most important and the visitor wants to find it FAST. You can build a folding site map here for free:

This site map is spider friendly (static links), but folds up for the viewer.
