Well, I own a gaming website with over 20,000 members. We got all of these members from Word of mouth. We started a year ago this month. I was wondering, what's the best way to promote our site to gain more members?

I have been listing our game in directories for the past 2 days.
Problem with search engine is our game name is "thunder arena" therefore in the search engine when you search "thunder arena" our game comes up. But if you search something that most people search for like "text based game" "online game" "game" we do not show up even for the first 10 pages. I was wondering how can we get on atleast the first 4 pages of game search on google.
What is a good way to get our gaming site out for people to play? We are looking for more business as well as more players that play for free of course. Our game is free and you can pay to get your stats up quicker then normal or play for free and work for everything in the game.

I do not know much about advertising and that good stuff because we don't rely on advertising or affiliates. So, How can we promote it more to get a better PR and to get a better alexa rank?

You need to read some tutorials on SEO (search engine optimization) you will then understand what needs to be done to show higher in the serp.

right jg, seo is the way to go... you need to be persistent about learning techniques by searching forums and googling. many have done it through trial and error, so are not anxious to spoonfeed those who haven't done a lot of searching themselves. one thing i've learned is that ebooks are useless and pretty much everything is out there in the open. you just need to jot down everything yourself...

Finally somebody that agrees with me. I just hate it when somebody spends a bunch of money on worthless books, most of which are already outdated. There are a lot of sites out there that make the same information available for free. Of course they pitch other things that you may or may not be interested in but I have no problem with that.

SEO is the way to go. Add revelant content to your site by the way of articles. Target your keywords and learn to write for the spiders. Start a links page and link only to revelant sites. Use text links rather than banners or add text above the banners.
