1. The crawler things make so many hits because they check all the links, is that right?

2. Not every directory crawls your site, if you submit your site, right?

3. My site has only been crawled about three times, once before I understood about directories... people have linked to me without me asking because of the unique character of my site... and then twice after I submitted to about a hundred directories... so does that mean the other 98 directories don't crawl??? or just haven't gotten around to it???

4. Do individual people actually use directories to go to sites???? very often????

5. Can you tell me again why directories are considered so important?

If a search engine robot manages to find every single page of your site in a visit then that is definately a good thing.

Most directories don't have their own spiders to crawl your site - it is up to the webmaster to visit your pages, or not, as the case may be.

Do you mean you are being crawled by a search engine, ie google, or seeing a visitor arrive at your site through a link in a directory? I'm confused as to what you mean here.

They sure do, and they generally prove to be targeted traffic if they are finding your site through a specific category. However, I only get around 30-40 visitors a day from directories.

Some are more important than others. DMOZ may possibly be the best to get listed in as there are literally hundreds of clones out there who would therefore also have your link in them.

Well, when I thought I had all those hits, right after I began submitting to directories (from the list you posted), I thought the hits were visitors, but someone here said that they always get traffic spikes when they are being crawled...

So, I began to see that was probably what happened to my site, I got just huge hits, especially on the pages to which I have the most links.

I figure that must be the crawlers... think?

Wow, you have thirty visitors a day from the directories???? Wow.
Well, I'll keep at it.

A lot of them are on break... to catch up, is the message they have posted.

Others are keen to get paid...

but others seem to do a just dynamite job.

Until June 15th - all those sites are owned by one person.

Are you sure you didn't miss the free option? I only did some submissions a couple of days ago and they were all free then

Could be. I have some brain damage, and sometimes I don't quite get things.
some of the submission pages are full of payment options, and I look for the free bit. I expect I could fail to see the free bit ...
