hi guys,
well am just looking for some ideas for unconventional methods to improve ur sites' ranking in SEs and stay on top....
everyone knows what google wants, what yahoo likes etc etc....
I am just thinking above than links submiting, meta text, titles, PPC advertising etc to increase traffic...
RSS and blogs are the buzz words today... but how to use them effectively???not every site can provide daily updated contents to put in blogs and feeds... what method should sites like those adopt???
Just think over that... Cant we have some unconventional Guerilla Mkting techniques that very few can think and implement!!
Please present ur views regarding this..

Hi;
There are a ton of possibilities for unique forms of marketing out there... One of the more interesting ones I once heard of was where a .com (sorry, I don't remember who it was) sent people out 'losing' wallets. Inside, of course, wasn't cash or credit cards, but rather the URL of the site in question :-P
If you're looking for inspiration for your own ideas in that regard, maybe take a look at some of the popular advertising-related blogs out there... www.adrants.com and www.adpulp.com may be helpful (if not on their own, then for their links/blogrolls).

One blog promoted its URL by running a photo contest wherein participants would have to place his URL in the most prominent place they could find and submit a picture of it to Flickr with a certain tag. The winner of the contest wrote the URL in big letters on a sandy beach.

An annoying, obscure method seems to be tatooing your URL to somebody's forehead...
Jokes aside, advertising on the sides of cars or travelling vehicles can be a very effective way to attract a more local audience. Good luck!

Yes, I was thinking about getting something to put on my car. Is there a place to buy something on the cheap?

Greetings All,
There's a site that is all about promoting reading--I can't recall the URL at the moment--and the idea is to leave books lying around in public places for anyone who wishes to claim them as their own. Inside the books there are printed stick-on pages with the details of the groups URL, etc, as well as the name of the person who left the book. If I recall correctly, there's another part of the message that asks the new owner to similarly leave the book elsewhere for others to read, so that these books are constantly on the move. The result is many people can potentially read this book, join this group, and so the group membership expands.
I don't know how this could be applied to unusual marketing for general ecommerce, but along with the lost wallets above you might be able to work another angle.
I hiope this helps a little.
Kindest regards,
Andreas Krokene

Andreas, that sounds interesting... if not a little expensive.
Personally, I'd go for flyers myself, but let me know how you get on

Greetings Harvey et al,
I won't try the idea myself. As you say it could be expensive to apply to Internet marketing. I gave this idea as a means of helping the lateral thinking process. The bottom line of any marketing is to get targeted visitors. I know that's Internet marketing 101. But seriously, to come up with different techniques, etc can be a real challenge. I suppose the quest for varied and unique marketing ideas to give us an edge will be the perenial challenge for all.
Maybe my two posts haven't been much help, but hopefully something will spark somewhere.
Kindest regards,
Andreas.

Some of these methods may work fine, but be careful not ruin or create a bad reputation with your url. People do read grafitti on walls as well as billboards, but which is respected? So just be sure to think them through before acting. I'm sure everyone would anyway, but I just had to say it.

This thread seems forgotten...
Let me add this one: A new website owner, who was completely unfamiliar with search engine optimization and website marketing was looking for help. In an effort to help market the website, the owner was instructed to place post-it notes with his website address on it in several bathrooms.
The result of this marketing activity? Within a few months his website rose to the top of the search engine rankings, he started to see a good amount of traffïc, and his search engine woes were quickly taken care of.
Full story is in Threadwatch.
Cheers,
Maggie

If you have a forum you can use a website to boost traffic, and posts to the forum. The best one I know of is www.communityboost.com
Give it a try if you need more traffic to your forums.

I love unconventional advertising
One good idea is to get a rubber stamp with your URL (Rubber Stamp Champ has good prices and excellent turnaround) and stamp every dollar bill that passes through your hands. It's not illegal (the word from the treasury dept is that "we discourage people from doing that. It is best to have the notes pristine," but that as long as the bill is not "unfit for reissue" it's ok). Money changes hands very often, and people get curious when they see a URL on a bill.
Leaving flyers in public places is also a good idea, so long as your site is general interest.
Also, if you feel like being a little silly, get some baloons, attach a message about your site, and release them. If someone finds one, they're likely to tell their friends, and you might even get an Oddly Enough piece in a local paper if enough of your baloons land in one area.
Beyond that, just write your url wherever you can; in the margins of your Skymall magazine when flying, in soap on your hotel room mirror, etc. People get curious when they see a URL in a weird place, and they tend to tell other people about it, which can set off a valuable thread of word of mouth referrals.

Please don't do that. It's bad for the environment and for all the small animals that try to eat the balloons and die as a result.
I like a lot of the other ideas though, but obviously, it depends on the type of site. Some sites will work that way and others don't.
We've been doing a few things with my husband's site:
http://www.notedpokerauthority.com
We've written press releases about him and his books that include his URL.
He's written many articles for various magazines and we keep them on his website.
We've done some link exchanges (not many).
But, of course, it's easier with him because he's already well known.

yeah, i agree. the balloons are a bad idea, and could land you some major negative attention.
In another similiar thread, I suggested writing your url with chalk on major sidewalks. it washes away after the first rain.
if your lucky, thousands will walk across your url in a day.

I was thinking about having a party celbrating my new site. I could have a few pc laying around the house getting people to become members of the site. Great way to have all of your friends around, and then get them talking about it the next Monday at work. Invite your neighbors, and everyone...make it like a open house for the whole day. Welcome to my home, beer is there, and let me walk you to my computer so you can first sign up.
