Hi,

Just wondered if anybody had used these as part of a campaign and also how effective they are?

Am I right in thinking the best way to right the thing is to give a story, not just an advert? I am a little confused about who to submit them to, if I write the article of give the facts etc. has anyone got any tips?

Thanks in advance

We just sent out a PR yesterday. Press releases should be news, not an advertisement. It's much better if you can outsource the writing to somebody who knows how to write a PR and they will know who to submit it to for maximum exposure.

PR is an excellant way to get your name out and gain some publicity. As long as you have something newsworthy to say.

You can take a look at our PR for an example of how one is written

Thanks for that, I have read press releases and obviously the key is to not advertise but give news as you put.

Just out of interest, what is the approximate cost for somebody to write a press release and submit it. There are a lot of "sharks" out there from what I can see who promise to submit it to several parties, but I remain sceptical...

I have used press releases a few times with very good results, 2 out 4 were picked up by television news media. I don't mean I just sent out 4 releases, I have written releases for 4 of my business ventures and 2 of them were picked up. You have to send out as many as you possibly can to every newspaper, radio station, TV news dept. etc... there is software that supposedly does this for you but its pretty spendy. I just surf google and email it to any all different media places I can find.

Its best to have the relase in the body of the email and not just as an attachment, but also as an attachment. It takes me about an entire day possibly two to get a press release out to say 100-200 media outlets. I wrote a release for my first website www.findanymanual.com and it was picked up 3 different TV news stations and I have to say the traffic sky rocketed each time they mentioned it on TV. It was truly amazing.

There is a certain format that the release needs to be written in for them to take it seriously and it should be written in the third person. Not "I" or "we" but 'They' You should also quote yourself like your being interviewed by someone else, like the person writing the release for example, (which is you but they don't need to know that) Things, like... Mr. Smith, chairman of the board, said "We are very excitied about our upcoming launch and look forward to a very successful campaign." He went on to say "What makes us different is..." You get the idea.

Also the headline is very important, it has to catch their attention immediately, news people see hundreds of press releaeses everyday from people trying to promote their business or new website. The head line should be daring and use words like "Revolutionary" "Exciting" "Amazing" and "New". Something like:

BlahBlah.com Revolutionizes The Home Mortage Industry With Exciting New Incentives

Or: BlahBlah.com Announces New Incentives That Will Revolutionize the Highly Competetive Motgage Industry

Something like that

There really is an art to writing a good press release and you might consider hiring a professional, you can find excellent writers on www.elance.com that will do it failry cheap like $100 bucks or so, but a poorly written press release can have a negative impact on your venture as well so it something to consider, it would probably money well spent.

The format is very important I can send you a copy of a press release I wrote that was picked up by the media and you can see the format and just change the info to suit your specific venture. PM with your email address and I'll send it to you, or anyone else interested in writing a press release.

Hope this helps.

I'll second that!

Thankyou very much for sharing your information, It has been most helpful!

I have a lot better idea now about the press release and how it can be used, as well as distributing it.

It is possible to put in a free press release at PRWEB.com although if you make a contribution they post the release higher up. The release has to be a news such as a trend in society or industry and the announcement of your website could perhaps be quoted as an example. they allow you to submit a link url as well

you may also try http://presstrust.com. These releases would give a few more links to your website and that should be helpful

Very interesting... I'll have to look into that. Sounds like a good idea to hire someone to write it since you're trying to convince people who are in the media

If you are looking to hire then zman who frequents this forum has, I believe, just started a PR writing and submission business.

Also, one further tip, from experience, the best days for releases are Tuesday's and Wednesday's - Monday is too busy and Thursday / Friday everyone is more interested in planning their weekend than reading press releases!!

Great advice. I have had very good success with press releases as well. Just modle it after a news story and make sure you always include Who, What, When, Where and Why and contact information (top right). Also, T.V. likes to receive releases in Video format (since they are a visual industry), still mostly in VHS. Great for demonstrations and the like, not for "reading the news".

Also, Love2sail, I love the Kramer quote in your sig. Seinfeld was a great show. My favorite was the bet.
