Each and everyday you hear stories about some name getting thousands of dollars from the buyer. You also jump right into the game of domaining and hope for that lucky day to arrive when someone might get interested in your domain name. Right?

The main problem with newbies over here is that they do very less research and start spending their money on useless names. After 6 months or a year their moral goes down the drain and they are back where they were but with lighter pockets then before.

Some people get into the trademark mess. They get sued by trademark holding company and then they show their temper openly on forums and other message boards.

Some can't even monetize their domains to get the renewal fees for the upcoming period.

If you have 4 or 5 domains then you can surely shed the amount from your own pocket. But when the figure goes around 100's and 1000's it is very hard to renew the domains for the future.

My advice to newbies would be to stick at 25 to 50 domains. They can earn for 10 or 20 renewals per year if your names are below average. Some domain might get you more revenue and it can fill the gap for you. Ultimately the main thing is to not lose a domain for nothing. You should at least get its registration fees from it. This will not start downfall of your domain empire which you want to build. 1 dollar loss is also a big loss if you have more then 100 or 500 domains in your domain portfolio.

So what kind of domains you should buy?

Choose wisely on which name you are putting your money. Three characters .com's are creating a lot of chaos right now in the market. Their prices goes sky high in domain name aftermarkets. Generic dictionary words are also long gone. New TLD's are not so stable right now, dot-com still rules the internet. You might get lucky in some other TLD's but I wouldn't advice you if you are new in the game.

4 letters have 456976 combinations from AAAA to ZZZZ. Of them only around 5000 are left. Which is of course the garbage.

What do we do now if we still want to get out feets wet in this?

Look for some guy who is willing to sell his domain for less. There are plenty of places to find this kind of domains available for sale at lower prices. You can go to forums specially created for this kind of discussions. If you don't know any then here is the one Nameslot.com Go there look for some domains which might fall under our category and then approach the seller. Forums places like Webmaster Forums are also a great place to look out for webmasters willing to sell their domains. Here also lookout for trademark issues and blacklisting for that particular domain. You can generally get this info from doing a whois search for that domain here Whois.sc
Keep your eyes and ears open for latest news. It might shed some light and you might be the lucky one who grabs that name for just registration fees and sell it for 1000's. Work on them and get every cent out of them. This will keep you in the game. The main thing over here is not to win the game but to be in it and be till the last.

Have to say that i often think of domain name traders as vultures.

None of you want to use the domains, you are just chancers taking keyword domains off the market in the hope of creaming a few grand in for something that cost a couple of bucks.

Frankly if it were up to me unless a domain name was actively in use i would make you hand it back!.

Having said that, over the last few years i have been involved in many sites. Some clients have asked for keyword domains and some domain traders that have held them have sold them on for $100 or so, a return of 20 times their money, not bad however, some have asked for a for a few grand and just taken the P@ss saying things like "i only sell domains starting from $2,000" and that kind of statement - the deals dont get done.

Why you think that its great business to stop someone using a domain they might need for business unless they buy it off you for a premium, i have no idea - where does this greed culture come from? Its like going round to a grannys house telling her you will buy her ugly china vase for $1 because you are doing her a favour and she needs the money and then selling it on for $1000 because you knew all along it was worth more. Some have no morals what so ever!!.

I dont see domain name trading as a business i just see it as commercial chancing, trading on someones missfortune that you registered a name they might want to use for their business before they do and you will now prey on that missfortune.

Anyway, In all i would say that many traders may well be left with loads of domain name stock on their hands due to own greed (which serves themselves right imo) because im seeing more and more requests for unique branded sites these days ie domain names that have no relationship to keywords, in fact some of the best sites on the net, google, yahoo, overture, ebay, amazon etc etc have nothing in their domain name that indicates what the site is about -that is the way forward imo.

If the trend continues a lot of domain traders could have domains they have to renew each year that will never be purchased. Now that would be poetic justice.

This post should ruffle a few feathers!!

Cheers

Am with you

I am totally against this "business". I am a web developer and have sites about web design, karate, music, women and so on. I hate it when I have to spend 2 hours thinking about a decent name just because some people sit on hundreds of domains name they'll never use.

And honestly, 10 USD is what I am willing to pay for a domain ... nothing more. A good webmaster can make a successful site even without one of those 2000 USD domain names.

Now you can kill me too

Well, I disagree with the two previous posters. The buying and selling of domains are as legitimate as any stock market where speculation drives the value of some products and devalues others.

Of course, another utilization of the domain ownership business model has nothing to do with sitting on a domain in the hope of getting a high bid from an interested party. Direct navigation and pay-per-click paradigms are driving real revenue streams from many of these sites.

It's capitalism, folks. Playing the "sour grapes" card because you don't want to have to think of a creative name for a new domain is poor ammunition against the folks who had the vision and proactivity of buying up all the obvious domain names.

I also agree with Kyrnt.

This is the sour grapes scenario. If this guys had precious ddomains with them they would not be writing this over here. They owuld be drinking costly wines and romaing with cute girls in their shiny cars.

So please be serious I am teaching you people how to still get from what is left.

Thanks.
