i am about to launch an auction website and i was wondering how to market it. Can anyone give me some pointers.

Depends who you're trying to appeal to, and what you ad budget is.

If you're looking to appeal to a very general audience, I'd suggest using a CPA (cost per aquisition) program, such as TradeDoubler or Comission Junction? Don't have a huge budget? Try clixgalore instead. Haven't use them myself, but they're certainly more cost effective.

On top of that, I'd first get a good member base going before splashing out on brand regognition. You'll find this to be more important as your project progresses, but first I'd concentrate on getting actual users. Use CPC marketing.

Oh, and one more thing. I'm not suggesting you con your users or anything, but before you spend a fortune advertising your site, make sure it seems to already have a good member-base. I know it's an auction site, but would you join a forum with one member and less than ten posts?

Quality stuff mate.

Ive seen other auction sites fail outright because of lack of members.

I will start with buying and selling completely free and offer incentives for people who get a certain number of positive feedbacks. Ill keep u posted on how i do

You should consider following promotional points for your site.

1. You should submit your site to the directories as many as you can.

2. You should get relevant and popular backlinks to your site.

3. You can also use PPC ad program and affiliates program.

4. You should submit articles to the free article submission sites.

5. You should also put press releases on free press release sites.

6. Word of mouth is the best tool to promote your site.

7. You can also work on offline marketing by placing URL on you visitng card and articles published in magazines.

I mentioned this in another thread a short time ago:

Try some offline advertising too in your local community paper. Its cheap, the paper is distributed to hundreds of thousands and most people that read the local rag are looking for a bargan. It should work well for an auction site.

i suggest you to get as many relevant links as possible. Do not submit your website to automatic links networks with "footprints" Do not place your link on others "links" pages. Find sites and pages with topic relevant to your keyword and place your keyword on their page as link text.
