I came across them almost by mistake; an adwords ad I was running plugging my St Pancras station prints got clicked on by an eponymous(?) site that was parked there - guess they saw the re-opening of the station to Eurostar as an oportunity to register the name and it probably paid off.
Up until last year my girlfriend and I had an "erotic photography site" < removed see forum rules > It was all a bit of fun, probably quite tame and arty and steered well clear of being a bog standard lurid porn site. Nevertheless it attracted bucket loads of traffic- didn't sell a single photo but made a lot of single guys very happy!
Seeing as how the hosting had expired, and there were still a lot of links left dangling in cyberspace I thought what the hell, bung it on Sedo and lets see what happens. It is now bringing in a couple of Euro's a week and will probably pay for my other site's hosting this year.
My point is, it probably does work as long as you have an established site and can't be bothered to keep the hosting up but I doubt very much that just buying a name and waiting for some one to buy, or find it will make any money at all.
