This is a continuation from my Introductory thread in the "Newbie" forum. But I would like to pose the same question here, since it is par for this thread.

I was wondering how much, when I'm starting out, should I charge people to build/host their websites?

One person suggested to start out low (which I think is a good idea) at first, I was getting an idea about it, by Googling the rates of some designers, and I was thinking "Woooah Momma" talk about big bucks, didn't think it was that big.

Esp for a person who just wants a Non-business site, perhaps a site with personal info on it and that's it.

So any idea what can I charge?

I've come up with these ideas so far.

1. Should I figure how much for a hosting service...say like 10 bucks a month to host, and then do a mark-up?
2. Man-hours (hard to determine here, depending on what you're doing)

Also, I don't have skill sets for certain things, like Flash programing (don't know much about flash, so if someone wants a "Flash" intro....they might not be interested.

I could post a whole lot more questions, but this it for now....thanks

If you're going to be working mostly around where you live, you can charge higher rates because you will have less competition, and you can meet one on one with your clients.

I would suggest starting out with an hourly rate; $25 an hour is reasonable for a compotent designer who is just starting out. As you learn more and get more clients, raise your rates.

In addition TO, the per hour rate...should I charge extra for the monthly hosting...say the company I'm with charges 10.00 per month, can I charge say, 15-20 bucks a month, or leave those the way they are?

The price of the hosting must depend on what it is offering. If you are offering 20mb with 2gb of bandwidth, it doesnt even worth 10$ Otherwise the average price of hosting is between 10 - 20$ CAD ($7 - $15 USD). Also, making some package for your customers (design+hosting) may be more interesting than a single service and sometimes, the "smarter" ones say that the package is a rebate. (Please, don't do things against the consumer protection law..this is illegal if your regular price of your hosting+design is the same thing than your actual rebate)

However, you must find your own marketing strategies. I suggest you to browse various hosting and design web site to know more about what I said in this post.

I hope that I helped you,
Regars,
Mike

Think you're selling yourself a bit short with $25ph for design and development - I guess it depends how fast you work also!
