Hi

*Apologies to Moderators if this is in the wrong place please feel free to move it.

I'm currently doing an entrepreneurial course at university and we have to think of a hypothetical internet business idea and then create a business plan and present it to potential 'investers'. I have been allocated the financial parts of the plan and I was wondering if you guys could give me some input on the amount of money a website like ours could make from advertising.

The website is basically a place where small bands/artists can create a profile, upload music and photos etc and get their music heard by the public - not a greatly original idea i know, but it is all hypothetical as an exercise as much as anything else. I'm predicting the site will have a few hundred members in the first year and a relatively large hit count aswell.

I'm looking for any (extreme ballparks are fine!) figures of the amount of money could be made from advertising in the form of PPC, general banner ads and possibly intro clips to certain tracks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you need any more info just ask!

Cheers
Stoot

If I were you I would start a record label that all of these potential artists could become part of, signed to. The label would recommend that all participants guard themselves against unqualified management deals as well as to protect their writer & performance royalties & before ever signing with anyone before getting legal advice. There is nothing wrong with creating a label for the purpose of protecting first the futures of any potential careers. In this fashion the website would increase in value for the participants and it would cost nothing to brand it. Yes it's a gimmick, but so is the music business.

You need a reason to attract artists. Creating a label that protects artists interests first could be a good idea. You could even attract good legal advice for attorneys that specialize in artist's interests. They would get advertising in return for writing articles dedicated to your proposed project.

I would include information on regional music associations and seminars going on around the country. Most of all I would include a database of performances and venues to cause the value of your website to go up.

In the end you have the power to increase the value of your website project by providing a resource that extends real value to the internet community and the artist's interests as well.

Good luck,
