I think two of the above mention ways is incorrect in a sense. The incorrect verses are :-
- Reciprocal link
- Submitting to article directories.
We all know google is the all time best search engine and most people refer google for what they want. If u want to have good listing in google, reciprocal linking is a bad idea. Even if other search engines like Yahoo! and MSN ignore this process, Googlebots are **** smart. Google prohibits link exchange and if u exchange links with another site, the googlebot will see it and even decrease your ranking.
And, about article submission. Its just a waste of time and effort. The first thing is that when u submit your articles to some directory, your site becomes more less unique. All the content in your site will be all over the internet and will be concieved as spam. If u work that hard to submit articles to your own site, u'll get its advantage. Most probably, those articles are bound to be on some low quality blogs who doesnt have quality traffic, content or Ranking. I'm a researcher of Google Technology and from what I found, if u're link is on a site with low pagerank than u, u're site wont get any increase in search ranking. So.. its **** sure that no site with great ranking and traffic wont borrow any content frm article sites. Low quality sites even tend to remove the footer link in the articles which makes u a fool.
So, to conclude, these two practices are pretty useless(it cant increase u're ranking) and sometimes, it lowers your rankings.

i could add some of my favourites:
sign guestbooks
apply for awards
make an awards programme
I sort of agree with the above comment, but i would say it's number 2. Make a great site and it's sooooo much easier to market, but have an ingenious strategy and then the marketing takes care of itself, for as many websites as u want, without having to spend too much "time" on anything. Time is the competition, with endless time we would all have huge websites thanks to everyday forum posting and link exchanges...etc

sure, this should send you in the right direction: http://www.awardsites.com/web_awards/directory.htm
if you have an excellent quality site and are willing to improve it according to strict criteria the then it might be worth applying to 4, 5 or 5+ rated award sites. otherwise u stand most chance of winning by applying for less prestigious awards, and in a general category rather than specialised, but of course the links from winner pages of less prestigious award sites will do less for your seo. good luck!

Another idea:
Submit a review of your site at the free articles directory http://articles.acemmedia.com or other article directories .
This would not be duplicate content with your site and gets you one-way links..

Google doesn't prohibit link exchanges. You need a balance between reciprocated and one way links. The problem is, if Google see's that the site is all one way links, it thinks you purchased all your links. If Google see's that the site is all reciprocated links the question then becomes are you part of a link exchange or co-op. These two cases, you will be penalized for, but you will not be penalized if you have a good balance between the types of links on your site.

One of the latest trend is the emergence of MySpace advertising. I am going to try that out soon once I get my hands on some advertising chances.

I agree, I submitted a bunch of articles to goarticles.com and for all of my time and effort I recieved virtually nothing. My artis have been downloaded over a hundred times and the only traffic I have recieved from them is a few hits comming directly from the article site.
Oh well, I think I learned the lesson.
