Yes. Directories are a source of free advertising. As a matter of fact they are the first line of search done by crawlers because they are spam free.

Unless you are talking about websites that give you free spots for advertising which don't happen often. Also, I don't think they actually advertise that well for you. Try to start paying for advertising and you will see some pretty good results.
