One thing you want to do is get the word out you exist. Add a forum signature with a link to your site here and other forum where you post. The more you post the greater the chance your link will be seen.
Submit the site to some directories. Learn what you can about search engine optimization. Become active in online communites like forums and comment on blogs. The more you get the word out about your site the more chance you have someone will come visit.

Try to get links from other popular sites having lot of traffic
Make your pages fast loading with low graphics (ideally a page should be less than 30 kb)
Use clean and neat coding.
Use your sites URL as signature in your email and forum postings
spread the word of mouth. Speak about your website to your family & friends and ask them to convey the message to their friends.
Use stickers in your car / bike to get the attention of your local people if your site is having local/ regional contents.
Dont jump the gun. do all the above at your own pace. your site will get noticed.

I'd like to do some adverstising as well. I have been exploring some options. Can I ask how you get your links in your signatures. Everytime I preview it, it comes up as the code. Please advise.
