I'm not an expert by any stretch but I have done some investigation into how typical anti-spam programs appear to work. (Besides I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night....)
It appears that some of the receiving programs (programs at the incoming mail server level) work by (1) identifying IP addresses that send out tons - millions - of email messages each day and place the offending IP address on a 'black list' so everything from that IP address is trashed and not forwarded to their users (2) attempting to identify 'key words and phrases' in both the subject and in the body of incoming emails - like perhaps free viagra (which sort of explains why these things now say ViAAgra or some such nonsense) - and trashing those individual messages. I have also 'heard' that some mail servers attempt to detect mailing lists addressed to more than 100 recipients and trash them also (although that one seems a bit far fetched to me but really, who knows what they can do?
I have also been told by Bellsouth support that they will trash outgoing messages sent through one of their mail servers if the message is going to 'too many' people.
I've done a few things to make sure my email goes through (1) I no longer send email from my website (since I can't seem to get them to explain the logic behind their mail block and 'blacklist' procedures) and now send everything through my personal email account at Bellsouth - just set up your outgoing mail server to Bellsouth and it will appear to all your users that the mail originated from your own website (2) When I do occasionally send out email that will be going to more than 50 people I always break the list down to less than 50 people and send it out multiple times (3) I always try to make sure that my subject line is clear and my message is business oriented and (4) I always include myself on bcc for these emails so I can quickly determine if something ever does get blocked.
Not sure if any of this is really having an impact but my email never gets blocked.
If you are really concerned about your email getting blocked and are sending out hundreds of email messages each day you can alway subscribe to an email list server to handle your distribution.
