(Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but the posts in the others didn't seem to really fit.)

I see people on forums like this one selling and buying domain names that, as far as I can tell, aren't anything special. The other day I saw someone list a handful of vague, three-word domains that weren't very easy to remember, and within a few hours, he had sold 2 of them for about $75 each. My best guess is that the buyers would either use the domains to redirect to their own sites, OR they would maybe make a single home page for that site, and then link the content to their other sites. But I swore that I read those things would get you penalized by Google. Is that not true? Can anyone explain exactly why someone would pay $75 for a domain without a website (could they really have any traffic)?

Personally i would buy an old domain name hoping to avoid the ageing delay that sometime penalises new domains.

and the spammers also snap up domains for the same reason. they can then "crash and burn" them sooner.

Matt Cutts has suggested that a domain transfer could make the aging delay "symptoms" reoccur.
