I work for an e-commerce company and we are getting an outside source to develop a module for us to use for the store. Is there anyway to protect against the programmer selling or giving away our module to friends and other clients for use? How do you protect your company against this?

In short no, and let's face it you would never know, if you saw it on another site and said "that's our's" all he would say is that it's simular, all he has to do is change a bit of code and it's different.
